Biography

Dr. Stephanie Maccombs-Hunter holds a Doctor of Philosophy in Counselor Education and Supervision and a Master of Education in Clinical Mental Health and Rehabilitation Counseling from ºìÐÓÊÓÆµ. She is a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor with a training supervision designation, a Licensed Independent Chemical Dependency Counselor, and a Certified Rehabilitation Counselor. Stephanie began her career in a federally qualified health center, where she worked with adults engaged in medication-assisted treatment and drug court programs. She joined Counseling and Psychological Services (CPS) at ºìÐÓÊÓÆµ in 2019 as a Staff Counselor and currently serves as Associate Director/Director of Outreach and Health Promotion. In this role, she provides leadership for mental health outreach and health promotion efforts across OHIO University, with an emphasis on creating upstream prevention and empowering the university community to support university-wide well-being. Stephanie oversees campus suicide prevention initiatives, including Bobcats Who Care and QPR, as well as OHIO's commitment to the Make Respect Visible initiative. She also provides training, supervision, and evaluation for doctoral interns and trainees, with a particular focus on developing skills in outreach, consultation, prevention, and health promotion. In addition to her administrative responsibilities, she provides individual, group, and crisis counseling and consults with students, families, faculty, and staff regarding mental health and safety. Her developmentally informed, integrative therapeutic approach draws from cognitive behavioral therapy, rational emotive behavioral therapy, solution-focused therapy, and motivational interviewing, with an emphasis on client strengths. As a native of Athens County, she also brings extensive knowledge of the local community. Her professional interests include college student mental health, substance use and co-occurring disorders, rural and Appalachian mental health, suicide prevention, and integrated care. Stephanie remains active in the counseling profession. She has presented at state and national conferences and published in peer-reviewed journals, including the , , , and the . Some of her leadership roles have included serving as Secretary of the American College Counseling Association (2024–2026), President of the ºìÐÓÊÓÆµ College Counseling Association (2023–2024), and President of the Southeast ºìÐÓÊÓÆµ Counseling Association (2020–2022). Outside of her professional work, she enjoys music, camping, and spending time with family, friends, and pets.
