Overview

How does a culture choose to remember its past — and what does that say about the present?
When societies build monuments, preserve historic sites, or open museums, they’re not just recording history — they’re making arguments about what matters, what should be remembered, and how. What stories are told? What’s left out? And how do those choices influence the way we understand ourselves today?

On this program, you’ll travel through some of Central Europe’s most iconic and complex cities — Berlin, Prague, Munich, and Nuremberg — exploring how public memory is shaped and shared across borders. You’ll deepen your understanding of major historical events like the Holocaust and World War II while critically analyzing how these events are remembered, taught, and memorialized today.

Highlights and Excursions

• Your program begins in Berlin, Germany where you will explore Berlin's sites and museums of historical significance including the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe, Berlin Mitte, and the Topography of Terror museum.
• Visit Sachsenhausen, Dachau, and Terezín concentration camps.
• Travel to Prague, Czechia for guided tours of its castles, synagogues, cathedral, and Terezin ghetto. Relax and explore the city during a free day.
• Take the train to Munich, site of the Beerhall Putsch and the White Rose Memorial. Visit Nuremberg’s Hall of Justice along with its medieval town square where the world-famous Christkindlesmarkt is held each Christmas.

Good to Know

• Academics: This program requires students to complete a 3-credit hour course in Spring 2027, and a 1-credit hour course in Summer 2027.
• Content: This program examines challenging and intense subject matter.
• Physical Activity: The program will require moderate to extensive walking and standing to participate in guided city tours and cultural visits.
• Priority Application Deadline: This program has a maximum of 20 students that can participate. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis with a priority deadline of November 1st and a final deadline of November 15th. Early application is highly recommended.

Living Arrangements 

Students will be housed in shared hotel rooms (2-3 students per room) throughout the program.

Program Dates 

May 19 - June 1, 2027

*Students will need to depart the US one day early in order to arrive in Berlin on the program start date.

Academics  

This program requires students to complete one of the following 3-credit hour course in Spring 2027, and a 1-credit hour course in Summer 2027.

• Spring 2027: Students choose one 7-week spring semester course:
  • ENG 2806: Gender, Writing, & Rhetoric (3 credits)
  • ENG 3850: Writing about Culture and Society (3 credits—BRICKS Diversity & Practice)
  • ENG 4600: Topics in English Studies (3 credits—ENG senior capstone)
• Summer 2027: Students will also enroll in the following 1 credit hour summer semester course:
  • ENG 3333: English Study Abroad (BRICKS Learning & Doing)

Cost  

The following information is intended to help participants understand the estimated costs associated with the program.  For additional information regarding program costs, please refer to Understanding Program Costs for ºìÐÓÊÓƵ-Credit Programs.

As of September 17, 2026, the total estimated cost for SUMMER 2027 is:

• Undergraduate: $7,948 + 3 Credits of Spring Athens-Campus Tuition/Fees + 1 Credit of Summer Athens-Campus Tuition/Fees
• Graduate: $9,488 + 3 Credits of Spring Athens-Campus Tuition/Fees + 1 Credit of Summer Athens-Campus Tuition/Fees

Tuition rates are based on participant's Tuition Guarantee or Graduate Program of Study (refer to Bursars for more information).

Eligibility

This program is open to all undergraduate ºìÐÓÊÓƵ students that have successfully completed ENG 1510. Interested graduate students are encouraged to contact the program directors about the possibility of participating.

The minimum GPA for admission consideration is 3.0, but students not meeting this requirement may petition the directors to obtain permission to apply.

Students who will be on probation at any point during the program for a conduct offense that took place less than a calendar year from the program start date may not study abroad. Read the entire conduct policy.  

Participants must have a at least a high school diploma or the equivalent (e.g. GED) by the start date of the program to be considered for eligibility. Students enrolled in College Credit Plus (CC+) are not eligible for study away programs.

U.S. citizens are required to have a valid U.S. passport book when traveling outside of the United States. If you plan to study or travel abroad in the next year,   â¶Ä¯n´Ç·É.
