The School of Dance celebrates diversity, builds community, and encourages critical dialogue through practice and performance. Our modern dance approach prepares students for bold creative professional careers through a comprehensive foundation in choreography and performance with an understanding of the theory and history of dance. Collaboration through movement and feeling connects our students, working right alongside faculty and visiting artists. The art of movement is in our every breath, but we’re not just dancers; we’re diverse thinkers, researchers, teachers, collaborators – always stretching forever forward.

The School of Dance Strives To:

Present original choreography by students, visiting artists and faculty, to re-stage choreography by visiting artists and faculty, and to reconstruct historical works.
Recognize and develop the unique balance of abilities present in each individual while providing students and faculty with an optimal learning and work environment that includes adequate resources to sustain excellence and further achievements.
Develop kinesthetic competency and performance presence while supporting and encouraging body-based knowledge and experiential learning.

Winter Dance Concert Features Works by Faculty, Visiting Artists

School of Dance students experience professional dance life at Pittsburgh Dance Workshop

For several dance students, a week in Pittsburgh offered more than the chance to take classes in new styles of dance. It gave them a glimpse into what it means to pursue dance as a profession, from learning choreography on a tight turnaround to performing alongside professional dancers and connecting with artists working in the field.

2026 Winter Dance Concert

“The Water” by Ricarrdo Hunter-Valentine

“The Water” is the newest work by Ricarrdo Hunter-Valentine. The work has a cast of four dancers, including both undergraduate and graduate students in the School of Dance.

“while we wait” by Christi Camper Moore

Christi Camper Moore’s “while we wait” is a new work that asks what it might mean to feel stuck, powerless or vulnerable in a world that feels chaotic. It reflects on stretches of uncertain time - moments that pause us personally and collectively. The work explores the emotional weight of waiting: its restlessness, heaviness and quiet, patient resolve.

“Saint James Joy” by Teena Marie Custer

Developed in 2021 during the COVID-19 pandemic, “Saint James Joy” is a choreographic inquiry into the relationship between environmental conditions and human resilience. The work, choreographed by Teena Marie Custer, reflects on the closure of street dance clubs - a loss that held particular significance for the choreographer as sites of collective movement, exchange and cultural continuity were gone, but also focuses on the rise of outdoor block parties during that time such as Saint James Joy in Brooklyn.

“The Ones Who Lived . . .” by Anthony Alterio

Anthony Alterio’s new work, “The Ones Who Lived...” is a large-cast piece that draws its inspiration from the rebellious spirit of 80s–90s rock ‘n’ roll and the raw power of subculture. Rooted in the history of countercultural movements, the piece explores how people find belonging among “freaks and geeks,” and how like-minded individuals discover not only community but also themselves.

“Being, Becoming, Believing”

“Being, Becoming, Believing” by the performers, shaped by Kendra J. Ross and Asma Feyijinmi. This piece that was created with Urban Bush Women as part of a Collaboration Lab with first-year dance students. The process that created this work relied on Urban Bush Women’s strategy to invest in building community, trust and dedicated space for discourse on matters important to the community that they are working with.

“This won’t last forever” by Sarah Ramey

Sarah Ramey’s new work, “This won’t last forever,” is about dancing, the passage of time and what we love. Or maybe: it’s about you, the passage of time, and what you love. “This won’t last forever” wonders what happens when we love something—or someone—deeply and consistently, without knowing what our love will yield.  This dance is performed by School of Dance students and dancers from the local community.
